A vibrant editorial illustration exploring queer reinterpretations of Western identity

Overview
Rainbow Cowboys is an editorial illustration created for a conceptual design course, based on the prompt “cowboy.” The project involved developing a visual response to an article (real or imagined) through illustration. I chose to explore how Western aesthetics have been reinterpreted within LGBTQ+ culture and contemporary fashion.

The Problem
The traditional image of the cowboy is often tied to hyper-masculinity, patriotism, and rigid cultural identity. This idea explores how those visual codes can be recontextualized and subverted through queer expression.

Audience
Readers of fashion and culture publications - particularly those interested in identity, pop culture, and evolving aesthetics within contemporary media.

Creative Direction
The illustration features six stylized figures inspired by pop culture icons, each representing a different facet of queer Western style. A rainbow-based colour system was used to unify the composition and create a rainbow flag while emphasizing individuality and expression.

Cultural Reference
The piece draws from both historical Western imagery and its modern reinterpretation in fashion and media, highlighting how traditionally masculine aesthetics are being reclaimed and transformed.

Solution
The final illustration reframes the cowboy archetype as something fluid, expressive, and inclusive. By combining bold colour, stylized character design, and cultural references, the piece presents a contemporary take on Western identity.

Reflection
This project allowed me to explore illustration as a form of cultural commentary. I was particularly interested in how fashion and identity intersect, and how visual language can be reworked to challenge traditional associations.
